Should I stop upgrading?

So I've seen a bunch of posts related to upgrade strategies but haven't found anything that fits the situation I'm dealing with. Apologies if I missed something.

With the addition of the tavern it seemed pretty clear that Inno's goal is for us to upgrade all units rather than focus on our top 5. So, I started working on all of my lower units and got them much closer to my top 5. FYI, I'm currently at WL 22. As I was doing the upgrades I noticed my PvP battles and even the stronghold battles were getting much more difficult even though my top units hadn't changed. It got to the point that I was getting only 3* and 4* battles in PvP at which point I might be able to win but then I have to wait 3 hours for the dead units to come back which essentially meant I stopped playing the game as it was no longer any fun. I decided to reverse course and poured everything I had into fully upgrading my top 5 and stopped all upgrades on any other units. I'm now back at the point that I get 1*-3* battles which is far more enjoyable. I know there are those out there that want to top the leaderboard or want the hardest challenge available but that's not my play style. I want a good challenge but if I have to wait over an hour between battles it really isn't an interesting experience.

So, my question is, am I better off just stopping all upgrades on lower level troops and just sticking with my main squad?

Thats not my experience, I’ve spent the last months bringing all my troops to lvl 23 fully upgraded and as long as I didn’t touch the top my PvP never increased.
The spawning of 4s comes and goes.
You can always manipulate it somewhat by putting on worst gear possible right before spawning of PvP or gradually putting on better gear in stronghold to get further.
Also works if you want to turn a 3s fight on a favourite map into 4s for extra WC.
If spawned with your best gear on then it will change to 4s when lowering gear.
You will not get more trophys but 25 extra WC can help in the long run.
